Peter Obi, who is running for president as a candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has told politicians that instead of giving money to voters during elections, they should invest in the development of human capital.
Obi said this on Thursday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, after meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says that between 2015 and 2020, nine million more young people in Nigeria will not have jobs.
The former governor of Anambra said that making money from politics has led to a high unemployment rate in the country.
“The fact that people don’t have jobs is because they are sharing the money,” Obi told NAN.
“That is the money that should have been used to do the right thing, like invest in education and health and improve human capital.”
The presidential candidate said that he has been reaching out to people from different parties to “save” the country.
Obi also said that Nigeria is a country that focuses on consumption, but he promised that if he becomes president, he would change Nigeria into a country that focuses on production.
He also said that if he is elected, he will make sure that the country works for everyone, no matter what social class they are in.
He asked Nigerians to vote for him because he has “the skills and the ability to turn the country around.”
